Mirabilia Urbis opens on Monday 7 October at 6pm. A contemporary art exhibition that embraces the historic center of the city of Rome in a walking itinerary that departs from Campo de’ Fiori and winds around its neighboring streets.
A project idea created by Carlo Caloro and produced by artQ13, curated by Giuliana Benassi with the support of Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali e Beni Culturali, with the people of Assessore Cinzia Guido del Municipio I Centro Roma Capitale. The project includes around twenty Italian and international artists: Alterazioni Video, Josè Angelino, Elena Bellantoni, Tomaso Binga, Carlo Caloro, Federica Di Carlo, Stanislao Di Giugno, Rä di Martino, Flavio Favelli, Grossi Maglioni, Hortensia Mi Kafchin, Britta Lenk, Via Lewandowsky, Girolamo Marri, Diego Miguel Mirabella, Jonathan Monk, Matteo Nasini, Lulù Nuti, Leonardo Petrucci, Giuseppe Pietroniro, Calixto Ramirez, Julian Rosefeldt, Corrado Sassi, Alice Schivardi, Lamberto Teotino.
The exhibition Mirabilia Urbis is configured as a particular path that crosses stops located in different spaces, both commercial and institutional, between the Parione and Regola districts: a maze of streets and alleys that characterize one of the most peculiar areas of Rome. The title, borrowed from the ancient tourist guides for pilgrims created in the Middle Ages, stems from the need to trace and map a new and unexpected path, offering the visitor a particular experience in approaching a totally new space. Through the works of the artists, the exhibition intends to analyze the transformations of this area of Rome, recording the shifts that led to changes in social, economic, administrative, political, cultural and artistic structures on which the fundamental values of contemporary reality rest.
The artists will build, through their artistic experiences, an unprecedented journey characterized by a great variety of expressive languages: from video to performance, from sitespecific installation to photography, painting and sculpture, drawing parallel and overlapping paths capable of offering a new interpretation of the cultural and historical geography of the area. The works will meet the spaces interpreting their history, creating a dialogue with the peculiar characteristics of a place or provoking visual contrasts, in some cases becoming mimetic and in others provocative or celebratory.
To name a few spaces involved in the exhibition: Cinema Farnese, the historic bookshop Fahrenheit 451, Palazzo Falconieri home of the Hungarian Academy in Rome, the historic shop Hollywood, the luthier’s shop and the headquarters of Colli Independent Art Gallery.
Performative actions - scheduled for Monday 7 October - will be appointments to be present for, such as that of Marri da Wala or Caloro at the Hungarian Academy in Rome; gestures in which to participate, as in the case of Bellantoni from Head Space or improvisations to be discovered, such as the intervention of the organist Livia Mazzanti at the Church of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone or the performance by Alice Schivardi, at the historical site of the PCI.
The visitor, with a map in hand, can be a "contemporary pilgrim" and immerse herself in the journey on foot or aboard a shuttle provided by the organization, independently choosing the various itineraries and the duration of the stops.
A book-catalog of the exhibition, published by Viaindustriae Publishing and made as a guide to the exhibition itinerary and travel guide, collects maps, critical texts, images and historical files enriched by interviews with local people and alternated with the narratives from owners of the spaces and the descriptions of the artists and works exhibited.
The opening of the exhibition will be held on Monday 7 October at 6pm at the Farnese Cinema (via Campo de 'Fiori 56, Rome), one of the book-catalog and route map distribution points, though it is also available in other locations.
For the opening night it will be possible to book a complete tour of the exhibition with a guide departing at 8pm from the statue of Giordano Bruno in Piazza Campo de 'Fiori by writing to: comunicazione@artq13.com Bookings are closed for this event!
