Oggi senza la documentazione fotografica non rimane nulla di un’opera d’arte, di una mostra o di una performance. Con il passare del tempo la fotografia che documenta un opera d’arte ha assunto un peso sempre maggiore. Ma qual è il rapporto tra l’opera e la sua riproduzione fotografica? Qual è la differenza tra la nostra percezione naturale di un oggetto e quella mediata dalla fotografia? È possibile vedere “realmente” l’opera senza l’intromissione dello sguardo del fotografo? Nel tentativo di trovare una risposta a queste e altre domande, il catalogo raccoglie le testimonianze di fotografi d’arte, italiani e internazionali e di studiosi di diverse discipline. L’obiettivo è quello di comprendere il modo in cui la fotografia con la sua evoluzione tecnologica sta trasformando il mondo dell’arte e non solo.
Seen/Unseen è il risultato di un esperimento editoriale prodotto da artQ13, spazio indipendente nato a Roma nel 2014 da Carlo Caloro e Britta Lenk che produce e sostiene attività di ricerca, sperimentazione e realizzazione di progetti espositivi ed editoriali.

There would be no record of artworks, exhibitions or performances today without photographic documentation, and over time art documentation photography has acquired an increasing importance. But what is the relationship between an artwork and its photographic reproduction? What is the difference between our natural perception of an object and that mediated by photography? Can one “really” see the work without the photographer's point of view getting in the way? In an attempt to find answers to these and other questions, this book brings together the insights of both Italian and international art documentation photographers, as well as scholars from a variety of disciplines. The aim is to understand how photography and its technological advancement is transforming not only the art world, but much besides.
Seen/Unseen is the result of a publishing experiment led by artQ13. Founded in Rome in 2014 by Carlo Caloro and Britta Lenk, artQ13 is an independent space that produces and supports artistic research and experimentation, as well as the creation of exhibitions and books.
